Video game review:Brink

The world you love has just become flooded and the only place to live is on a floating utopia known as the Ark. Will you choose to escape the Ark or will you save it the Ark? Splash damages and Bethesda Software has just released their new game Brink, a futuristic shooter with some extremely detailed customization to your character. Will this game be unique or will it end up in the 10 dollar bin within the year.
Let’s begin with the story line. The world has flooded and is no longer ground on earth. You live in a giant floating city called the Ark. The Ark was designed to bring nations together that want to stay alive from the water. At first the Ark was supposed to be a utopia. Sadly a lot of the cities people have gone into poverty and starting to rebel. You are now on the brink of choosing a side for the upcoming civil war on the Ark. You can either try to keep peace and save the Ark as the Security, or you can escape the Ark for a better life as a Rebel. There is no good or bad side in this game. Both factions have good reasons to fight. Unfortunately this game doesn’t have much of a story after the intro. Before each mission a one or two minute cut scene is played, with a couple of forgettable characters while you’re in the background doing something. This game has almost no story line. I played through both campaigns multiply times and I honestly cannot tell you any main characters name. You could skip every cut scene and you would still understand the story perfectly. Also I beat both campaigns in less than 8 hours. This game’s campaign feels like an afterthought or rushed you have no idea what is going on.
On to gameplay, Brinks gameplay is very unique it mixes first person shooting with parkour moves such as running over objects, walls, and anything that gets in your way. In Brink you better keep moving cause you will be destroyed if standing still. You have a choice of three body types, light, medium and heavy. The light body types are the fastest and most athletic of the group. They are also the least protected and can only use submachine guns and pistols. The medium body type is slower and less athletic from the light body type, but can use all the weapons the light type can plus snipers, grenade launchers, and assault rifles. Heavy body type is the most powerful. They can use all the weapons plus rocket launchers, and chain guns. They are also the slowest and are not athletic. The game also splits you into to four different classes to choice from. Soldier can plant charges and give ammo. Engineer can repair; boost weapons power, and disarm charges. Medic can revive wounded team mates and give health boosts. Operative can hack into systems, and disguise themselves as enemy teams. All four classes have to work together to win the round. Finally your character and weapons are very customizable, over a billion different ways to make your own unique character. My weapon had a bayonet, red dot scope, drum mag and a silencer. What makes this interesting is I will not find another person in the game that looks like my character. The A.I in the game is very rough. Your team most the time won’t go for the main objective. Don’t expect A.I. medics to heal you if they’re not standing right over you. Plus half way through the game the enemy team will suddenly be almost unstoppable and mow your team without losing any health. The games controls are a little clunky and a lot of times I didn’t know the main objective was while fighting.
Now to graphics and multiplayer, graphics for this game is pretty nice. Storming the slums, or raiding the rich trains ways and clubs all feel real and should be adored. Multiplayer sadly almost does not exist on the xbox version. There is no normal multiplayer like team death match or capture the flag. Campaign, free mode, or challenge mode are the only games you can play. Splash Damage even made Brink’s first downloadable content free for 2 weeks to get people to come back. Personally I think that comes out as desperate for multiplayer.
Honestly this game has some good but a lot of bad. For a game that got delayed multiply times and still lacks in many areas is quite a shame. With no multiplayer, story, and irritating A.I. this game made me go crazy. It was a tough choice between rent and pass, but honestly don’t waste your money and time on this. I’m giving it a PASS rate. It’s ok for about 10 minute and that’s when I’m creating my character.

Video Game Review: Homefront

When asked what are the biggest modern warfare games out there the first thing that comes to mind is the Battlefield series and the Call of Duty series. THQ, not known for making first person shooters, has released Homefront, a military shooter where Korea has taken over America. Will this game be able to reach the status of a good multiplayer shooter, or will it be just another wash up?
First off, let’s start with the storyline. The writer of Red Dawn and Apocalypse Now also wrote the story of Homefront so I was expecting a top of the line story mode. America has been in a depression where half the population is out of a job and gas prices are up to $20.00 a gallon. At the same time North Korea is slowly taking over Asia unifying all the Countries together. Then one day North Korea launches a satellite to deliver a message to the American people. This message knocks out all power in America and then Korea slowly begins to take over and eventually Korea controls America. You play as Jacob a former American pilot just trying to get by. When chained to a bus seat you look out the window and you realize the horror that has become of America. You see people up against walls, a young couple getting separated from each other. People trying to run away and are shot down in mere seconds. You see soldiers throwing Americans in mass graves. Parents being shot in a firing range in front of their children. You can easily see that America has gone to hell. After seeing all those horrifying sites, a semi-truck rams into the bus you are on. Resistance fighters Connor and Rihanna (What’s her name?) come to bust you out and now you are part of the resistance. At the beginning of the game when fighting the Koreans you are out gunned, out manned, and out of training skill. Homefront is very different than Modern Warfare 2 with trained military fighting the invaders of America; you fight alongside other citizens that have no training. Throughout Homefront you slowly see your fighting barely scratch the Korean Army to the actually turning point of the war. The storyline is absolutely amazing; the characters are full of life and express themselves in different ways. The only downside of the storyline is the length is extremely short. I finished the game in less than 4 hours. The storyline is one of the best I’ve ever played, but it’s also the shortest I’ve ever played.
Now on to gameplay, every battle is unique. If it’s a stealth recon, sabotage, frontal assault, or ambush all the battles are different. In many missions, you have the opportunity to control the Goliath, a 6 wheel unmanned vehicle with a chain gun and missile launcher, pretty much the RC car from hell. All the guns are the same and don’t have much different between them. Also in most gun battles I would run out of ammo and I would have to find more, putting you in the mood that you are really out matched against the Korean forces. Also before hopping over walls, climbing ladders, opening doors, or crawling under buildings, you have to wait for all your teammates to go through before you can. This can become annoying when you get somewhere and you have to wait for all your teammates before moving ahead. This game is unique because of the environment. When you’re fighting through a suburb neighborhood, baseball field, a grocery store, and the golden gate bridge, you realize that you are in war torn America. To make it more realistic, a lot of product placement is seen in this game. This can be a good or bad thing depending if you like product placement. You take cover behind a full throttle vending machine, or running and gunning into a white castle restaurant, and at one point I shot missiles into a hooters. On the downside, the graphics are out dated even on a high definition television.
Finally the multiplayer, with 32 player multiplayer, Homefront is a mixture of Battlefield and Call of Duty. Having customizable perks, weapons, attachments, kill streaks, and equipment, it is almost identical to Call of Duty’s multiplayer. What was interesting was in order to use vehicles; you have to earn them by using points from capturing and defending objectives, kills and teamwork. With points, you can buy vehicles, missile strikes, and many more. A downside of multiplayer is the code that comes with the game. Buying the game, you can extend your multiplayer with a code. This is a problem if you rent the game or buy the game used. If you want the code you’ll have to cough up another 10 dollars. Another problem is the number of weapons. Multiplayer has 4 assault rifles, 2 light machine guns, 2 submachine guns, and 2 snipers. If you want the only shotgun you would have to preorder the game before it came out. With such a little selection of weapons this lost my interest in multiplayer.
Over all, this game kind of disappointed me. With such a good storyline it was a shame that it was so short. Graphics were poor and a water downed multiplayer drove me away from playing it. Overall this game is a RENT. This game’s storyline is amazing, everything else, not so much.

Video Game Review: Black Ops

With gaming company, Infinity Ward’s, Call of Duty Modern Warfare one and two have been the number one shooting game for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. With the first Modern Warfare that sold 5 million copies first day and Modern Warfare 2 selling 7 million copies the first day. Between these two extremely popular video games, Treyarch released Call of Duty World at War which had the game play of Modern Warfare with a World War 2 setting. The game wasn’t bad but wasn’t good either, and when Infinity Ward came out with Modern Warfare 2 just one year after World at War, World at War got pushed aside. Now it’s Treyarch’s turn to make it’s comeback with Call of Duty Black Ops. Will this be a ground breaking game, or will be another screw up?

Lets begin with story line, the entire takes place in flashbacks when you are being interrogated. You play as Alex Mason, special operative in the 1960’s. You are everywhere throughout this game at one point you will be in a Russian prison break to Cuba to the deep jungles of Vietnam. You even have a flashback to the final days of WW2 where you kill Nazis in the Arctic Circle. Reznov, from World at War has a huge role throughout the game, and Demitri, your Russian character from World at War also makes a appearance. The games story has multiple twists and turns, that are quite shocking. The one thing about this game is that is completely different then all the other Call of Duty games is some of your objectives are just right down personal. This game at some points feel more like an action movie then a video game. With memorable characters this is the best Call of Duty storyline in the series. Gameplay, just like in all other Call of Duty games, is top notch controls are simple and easy to learn. Call of Duty has been famous for the game’s multiplayer. Unlike the other Call of Duty games, multiplayer is based on credits. Everything you unlock you must buy with credit you earn in games. This is a good thing, in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 you had to get 300 kills and difficult challenges to unlock extended mags. In Call of Duty Black Ops you can purchase extended mag first thing when you purchase the gun. Everything is extremely customisable. You create your own emblem, and their are thousands of designs you can create. You can even design your red dot site, change the color, change the lens color, even change the dot itself to different symbols such ad a square, triangle, star, skull, and many more. Contracts are also a new add on to the game, where you purchase certain challenges. Contracts cost money, but if you complete them in the given time limit, you get more credits. Black Ops also brings new wager matches where you bet to see if you win. Wager games do not have the typical game like in normal multiplayer. One of these wager game types is gun game like in Counter Strike by Valve. Gun game is a free for all where every one has the same weapon. Every kill you get you upgrade by receiving a better gun, who ever goes through all the guns win. Also if you need practice for multiplayer, Combat training puts you up against A.I. bots which can be entertainment if multiplayer is stressing you out. Just as its popularity in World at War, the famous nazi zombies are back. With two awesome levels the nazi rampage is more fun than ever. One of the levels you play as Nixon, Castro, secret agent, and John F. Kennedy. When playing as those characters they will blurt out comments when slaying zombies that made me bust out laughing.

This game is unbelievable, with a breath taking storyline, very detail customization in multiplayer, fun combat training, hilarious zombies, and entertaining new multiplayer game types. This game has everything, and personal it’s better than Modern Warfare 2. Treyarch really picked up their game and is the game this holiday season. Without a doubt this is a for sure buy.

Video Game Review: DJ Hero

On November 7th, 2006, Harmonix made one of the most popular games of all time. We all know it as the very popular Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero, the party game, the video game that doesn't make you look like a nerd. November 2009, 3 years after Guitar Hero came out, Harmonix came out with a brand new video game that will get you off the rock stage and into the clubs. DJ Hero is Harmonix's brand new game has come out and isn't getting quite the same approach than its predecessor. Is this game as good as Guitar Hero?

Lets start off with the game play. You no longer have a guitar controller but a record controller. Using your right hand, you have a scratch disk with 3 buttons which are green, red, and blue. Then,
using your left hand, you have the crossfader, effect nob, and your euphoria button. You would think with only three buttons the game would be easier than Guitar Hero. Well, it's not; its actually a little more challenging. When notes appear you either tap them (you pretty much press the button alined with the color coordinated.) Or you hold the button and "scratch" the record. or move the record back and forth. All the songs are two songs mixed together, and part of the song is on the green side and the other song is on the blue side. During the mix, you will have to go from one song to the other, by using your crossfader. This can be very confusing, but it's very easy to pick up. There is also euphoria which is dj hero's version of satr power. Also if you get a long enough streak you can get a rewind symbol. This will allow you to rewind some of the song. There are over 90 different mixes in Dj hero. All the songs sound amazing with the other song there mixing. You could have Gorillaz mixed with Gwen Stefani, Benny Benassi mixed with Black Eye Peas, Eminem mixed with Beck, Daft Punk mixed with Queen, and much more. The sound is amazing as well; no song sounds like it shouldn't be with the other one. Unlike Guitar Hero, you can't fail songs, you just get low star rating. Stars are very important; since they let you unlock, new venues, characters, outfits, headphones, and new decks. A lot of famous Djs are playable throughout the game. From Grand Master Flash who invented Djing, to Dj Shadow. You can even play as Daft Punk. Multiplayer is starting to become more popular, Not many people would play at first, but I'm seeing a rise in multiplayer where you can have a Dj off or play cooperatively. Some songs have guitar in the song and you can play co-op with one person djing using the dj controler and the other one playing guitar using a Guitar hero controller. Over all I love this game. Its very fun there's so many songs, its easy to pick up, and you can play co-op with guitar controller. The only downside is that the game is 120 dollars, but trust me its worth it, it's alot lighter than hauling all the rock band or guitar hero stuff. Also this game has a play back where it plays it by itself if you just want to hear the songs at a party. This is a great game that got overlooked. This is a for sure BUY.

Video Game Review: Darksiders

What happens when you take God of War, Legend of Zelda and biblical allusions all in one? You get the Darksiders, a violent hack and slash with some tricky puzzles.

You play as War, one of the four horse men written in the book of Revelation's in the Bible. The apocalypse is starting and demons and angels have begun fighting and, for some reason, you are summoned even though the seven seals have not been broken. However, the horsemen are only supposed to be summoned when the seals are broken; that's why you're by yourself. Sadly, your summon was a false alarm and, because of YOUR arrival, the fabric of the world has been ripped to shreds, and the human race is extinct. You take the blame, the council takes all your powers, and now you have to redeem yourself. You have to hunt down a giant demon named the destroyer. Things with him don't go too well; the destroyer beats the mess out of you, and you run back to the council with your tail between your legs. Now, it's personal. Also the destroyer is becoming very strong and might destroy balance.
The game is pretty much separated in four sections. Each section is different in each way, all of them having a boss at the end of each area. The game takes place a century ahead of present day. You explore ruined cities throughout the game. You also collect souls when playing the game and different soul colors mean different things. Green souls are health, yellow souls are for wraith bar, and blue souls are your currency.
Like many hack and slash games you buy new weapons and moves from the store using blue souls. You also have a wraith bar which makes you do special moves, this bar can only be raised by yellow souls. There is a plethora of weaponry at your disposal throughout the game. At first, you start out only using your huge sword. But you can gain many weapons such as a scythe, revolver, cross blade, turret, grappling, and lots more. Also, there are parts in the game where you ride your trusty steed named Ruin, and sometimes you actually get to ride the angel's Griffin.
Graphic-wise, the game are last year. They seem a little out of date, and a little like the cartoons you watched when you were a kid. Much of the game looks like it came right out of world of war craft. However, overall this game is alright. The graphics are kind of poor and so is the storyline. At first, it took me a minute to figure out what was happening. Your character has zero personality, and you fight angels and demons, like you can't pick a side. On the bright side, though, this game is pretty fun with the fighting engine, and all the upgrades for your character. To me this game is RENT. It's a really exciting game...I just wish I remembered what I was fighting for.

Video Game Review: Left 4 dead

It's very odd for valve gaming company to be making a sequel to their smash hitting game left 4 dead just one year after its release. Half life and Half life two were 9 years apart. Half life 2 was a phenomena. But, only a year later, is left 4 dead 2 worth the buy? Left 4 Dead two takes place, in southeast United States. Fight your way from Georgia (hey, hey shout out!) swamps to the streets of New Orleans. There are 5 campaigns this time; 3 consist of 5 chapters, and two with four chapters. Also an improvement is that some of the campaigns take place in the day time. Unlike in the first game where all the campaigns were at night. Another interesting thing is that each campaign takes place where the last one finished.
There is a whole new cast. First you have Rochelle the girl who is almost the same as Zoey from the first game. Then you have Elise, your typical southern redneck who just likes to shoot stuff. Then you have Coach a big southern man who was a coach from a high school. And finally you have Nick, your Louisiana con man with his white suit. These four are full of personality with some funny comments when killing zombies. You still have the same 5 special zombies, hunter, boomer, smoker, tank, and witch, but there are some new special zombie types in the game. First you have the jockey: a freaky laughing thing that looks like he's related to Golem from lord of the rings. The jockey jumps on your head and starts clawing you. He's like the hunter except you can move around. Next we have the spitter; she launches acid at you and can do some damage. Finally you have the charger; the charger will bolt up to you and then begin smashing you to the ground.
This time you have melee weapons you can choose either a frying pan, cricket stick, fire ax, crowbar, guitar, night stick, machete, samurai sword, and the chainsaw. Graphic wise, this game has made a major improvement. This game could be one of the goriest games of all time. In the first game when you shot the zombie he might lose his head or a leg or arm, but in this game if you shoot a zombie in the chest his chest explodes and you can see in it. When slicing zombies, you can see the cut where you actually swung. The scenery in the game is breath taking: the sunsets, or the destructive city, or run downed towns all have loads of detail. There is the same verses mode from the first game but now there is a new game mode called scavenge mode. In this mode the human team has to grab gas barrels while the zombie team has to stop them. Also there is a new realism mode, which makes the game even harder if you are craving the challenge. Overall this game is amazing, the graphics, weapons, and zombies make this game a real masterpiece. This game is a for sure buy.
